back orders

Recommended Posts

In an inpatient hospital pharmacy, if there is a back order of a medication and the nurse came to the pharmacy asking for the dispensing of the medication, saying that the patient had already missed the first dose. What are the solutions that technician could communicate with the nurse?

Its interesting case scenario! There are two important points should be communicated. It is important to let nurse know that she should NOT double the dose or adminstered the yesterdays missed dose. The secondly, technician should bring this attention to pharmacy tech manager, or pharmacist on duty.

Thanks for reply, sir.

I wonder if it is necessary for a technician, when the nurse steps into the pharmacy for the back order medication, to provide nurse with the possible solutions such as the stock in the pharmacy will be checked out immediately to see if there are still a few of pills remaining that could be dispensed right away, or the emergency supply will be purchased from other pharmacies (like other hospital pharmacy, or retail pharmacy like shoppers drug mart, etc.). Even more, is it wise to ask the pharmacist to communicate with the doctor to change the back order medication to an interchangeable medication?

Thats correct, to solve problem, it is necessary for technician to provide possible solutions in the following steps:

1) checking pharmacy stock, if few pill remaining could be dispensed and ask nurse to NOT do double the dose for the yesterday missing dose.

2) Inventory technician can order emergency supplies from other hospitals or retail pharmacies

3) If drugs are too pricy, than can be contacted to pharmacist to consult prescriber to change medication.

Hope this is helpful.
